Is It Time for Denture Replacement? Top Signs to Watch

Aug 30, 2022

Dentures are necessary for many people after tooth loss. Dentures can help to restore your ability to eat and speak and can also improve your appearance. However, although dentures are made to last, they will eventually wear out, and have some limitations which necessitates replacement. Learn some signs that you may need to replace your dentures.

Your Dentures No Longer Fit

As you age, your mouth changes shape. Therefore, your dentures may become loose, which hinders your ability to eat and speak properly. Furthermore, if you have had recent weight loss or gain, your dentures may not fit as they once did. Some signs that your dentures are loose include:

  • Dentures that shift in your mouth
  • Dentures that rub against your gums and cause irritation
  • Dentures that make sounds when you eat or speak

If you notice any of these signs, consult your dentist for an assessment. The professional may either adjust the dentures, make new ones based on the condition of the dentures or make other recommendations for more advanced treatment such as implants to help stabilize your dentures.

Your Dentures Look Old and Worn

Dentures are made to last, but over time they will show wear and tear. However, you can do a few things to protect your dentures from premature wear.

Handle With Care

Dentures are fragile, so you should handle them cautiously. Don't drop them, as that may cause the dentures to crack or break. You may even consider making a duplicate denture, just in case.

Clean Dentures Daily

Just like your natural teeth, dentures require you to brush and observe dental hygiene. Brush the dentures and rinse them daily to remove food particles and plaque. Next, gently scrub the front, back, and top of each denture. Use a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratches.

Soak Dentures Overnight

You should never sleep with your dentures as that can cause them to warp. In addition, dentures need to stay moist so they don't dry out and change shape, so you need to soak them in a denture-soaking solution every night.

Visit Dentists Regularly

Never overlook the importance of regular dental checkups, even after you get your dentures. You should make your routine dental visits for a professional denture cleaning and and oral cancer evaluations. Your dentist will also examine your dentures for any damage and make necessary repairs or replacements.

Even with the above tips, your dentures are prone to wear if they exceed their lifespan. Therefore, you should replace the dentures as recommended by your dentist. Also, watch out for signs of wear such as cracks, chips, and scratches to determine if you should replace your dentures. Failure to replace worn-out dentures only puts you at risk of infections and gum disease.

Your Dentures Have Stains

Dentures are made of porous materials that absorb color over time. To help prevent discoloration, avoid foods and beverages that can stain your dentures, such as:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red wine
  • Berries
  • Curry
  • Soy sauce

If your dentures already have stains, brush them with toothpaste specifically for denture cleaning. Your dentist may also recommend the best solution to soak your dentures to help remove stubborn stains.

However, no matter how well you take care of your dentures, they are still susceptible to discoloration. For instance, if your dentures are more than 10 years old, they are nearing the end of their lifespan, and replacement is the best option over attempting to remove deeply set stains.
